Costa Rica: Day 2: Arenal to MonteVerde

We started this day with some adventure in La Fortuna – Ziplining!  That is flying in between mountains attached to a line, while you are 1000s of feet above the ground! We visited the Sky Trek complex in Arenal, and first took the Sky Tram gondola up the mountain. There were nice views of the Arenal Volcano up there.

We then got fitted by their experts with all the gear!  Can you see the fear on my face?

There were 8 ziplines in total.  The first two were just trial ones, and and you can drop out after those.  Starting from the third one, you are literally flying from one mountain top to another.  Once you get over your initial fear of dying, there are actually nice views of the Volcano and Lake Arenal.

After the fun activity and some lunch, we took a taxi-boat-taxi to Monteverde (also arranged by our tour company).  The taxi part was a shared shuttle, which picked us up from our hotel in La Fortuna, to the base of Lake Arenal.  We then boarded the boat that took about an hour to reach the other end.  The boat rice was pretty scenic and reminded me of Hawaii.

After reaching the other side, we boarded another bus that took us to Monteverde.  The ride was around 1.5 to 2 hours, and incredibly bumpy.  By the time we reached, it was around 6pm.  We had dinner at a nearby restaurant and went to bed.  We stayed at the Cabinas El Pueblo in Monteverde, which was cheap and backpacker-friendly.  They had a kitchen you could use, and nice common areas, with swings and hammocks.
